With the US presidential election approaching and a new administration set to take office in January, questions arise about how this could affect relations with other nations, particularly China. The Biden administration’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan concluded his visit to Beijing with a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping
China Beige Book International Managing Director Shehzad Qazi joins to discuss how the election outcome could impact China-US relations.
Qazi suggests that if Vice President Kamla Harris were to win the presidency, "there’s going to be much more continuity than not" for Biden-era trade policies with China. However, Harris’s policy proposals around China still remain unclear.
Regarding the likelihood of a second presidency under former president Donald Trump, Qazi finds that "looking at 2025 and onward, there is a Round 2 of a trade war coming between the US and China." However, he notes that if Trump were to be reelected, it could present a much more "chaotic" landscape and "far more aggressive" policies.
However, Qazi emphasizes that regardless of who occupies the White House, "their hand will be forced to get a lot stricter, a lot harder, a lot tougher on China."
