- Electric Hydrofoil Technology: The Hydroflyer is an electric hydrofoil, meaning it uses a wing-like structure (the hydrofoil) beneath the water to lift the craft above the surface as it gains speed. This reduces drag and allows for a smoother, more efficient ride compared to traditional boats and watercraft.
- Design and Features: The Hydroflyer is designed to resemble a cross between a surfboard and a small personal watercraft. It features a long, narrow board with handlebars for steering, similar to those found on a jet ski. The craft is equipped with a powerful electric motor and a rechargeable battery pack, which drives a propeller beneath the water to propel the Hydroflyer forward. It includes a remote control system that allows the rider to adjust speed and power settings, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced riders.
- Performance: The Hydroflyer can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour), depending on water conditions and rider weight. This makes it one of the fastest electric hydrofoil boards available on the market. The battery life can last up to 2 hours on a single charge, depending on usage patterns and speed. The battery is swappable, allowing users to extend their time on the water with additional battery packs.
- Ride Experience: One of the main selling points of the Hydroflyer is the unique riding experience it offers. As the hydrofoil lifts the board above the water’s surface, the rider experiences a sensation of “flying” above the water with minimal resistance and smooth gliding. The handlebars provide additional stability and control, making it easier for riders to maintain balance and maneuver the craft compared to traditional foil boards that require greater skill.
- Target Audience: The Hydroflyer is marketed towards a broad audience, including water sports enthusiasts, thrill-seekers, and those looking for a new and innovative way to enjoy time on the water. It is suitable for use in a variety of water conditions, from calm lakes to ocean waves.
- Safety Features: The Hydroflyer includes several safety features, such as an automatic shutoff when the rider falls off, to prevent the board from continuing without the rider. It also has a leash that connects the rider to the board, ensuring the craft stays within reach if the rider falls. The design also includes protective guards around the propeller to minimize the risk of injury.
- Eco-Friendly: As an electric watercraft, the Hydroflyer is more environmentally friendly than traditional gas-powered jet skis and boats. It produces no emissions, operates quietly, and has a minimal impact on marine life and ecosystems.
- Cost and Availability: The Hydroflyer is positioned as a premium product in the personal watercraft market, with a price tag ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 depending on customization options and accessories. It is available for purchase online and through select retailers, with options for customization in terms of color, battery size, and additional accessories.
- Applications Beyond Recreation: In addition to recreational use, the Hydroflyer has potential applications for water patrol, lifeguard operations, and eco-tourism, thanks to its quiet operation, low environmental impact, and maneuverability.
- Growing Popularity: The Hydroflyer has been gaining popularity due to its innovative design and the unique riding experience it offers. It’s increasingly seen in popular water sports destinations and is garnering interest from influencers and celebrities, helping to boost its visibility and appeal.
It wasn’t until I plunged into the choppy waters of San Francisco Bay for the fourth time that I realized how audacious—or perhaps reckless—I had been to venture so far on a motorized surfboard I’d never ridden before. This wasn’t just any surfboard; it was an electric hydrofoil board made by the Canadian company Hydroflyer. Accompanied by Hydroflyer’s CEO, Jerry McArthur, who was riding another of his company’s boards, we started in the calm waters of a lagoon in Sausalito. But my curiosity led me to the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, where the waves and current are strongest.

Navigating these challenging conditions proved the Hydroflyer’s capabilities, but my own aquatic skills were put to the test. High tide brought powerful currents and headwinds, making the journey under the bridge a daunting task. Despite McArthur’s warnings, I pushed the throttle to its limit, only to find myself nearly stationary, battling the relentless forces. After finally crossing under the bridge, I was once again tossed into the water by the wind. With McArthur’s help, I managed to get back on the board before the waves could drive me into a bridge pillar, and we made our way back to the safer waters of Sausalito.
By the time we returned to the lagoon, I was exhausted, barely able to stay upright on the board. The experience was an exhilarating rush, offering a breathtaking view I might never have witnessed without this expensive piece of technology. McArthur laughed, admitting his lawyers wouldn’t be thrilled to hear about our adventure.
Hydrofoils, particularly electric ones like the Hydroflyer, are gaining popularity among the wealthy—think Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who is known to be an avid hydrofoil enthusiast. These sleek devices, which can be seen at beaches and lakes worldwide, offer a quieter and less intrusive alternative to jet skis. They provide a thrilling experience similar to windsurfing but without the need for wind.
The Hydroflyer, which has been on the market for about a year, currently offers the Cruiser model, with the Sport and Inflatable models on the way. The Cruiser starts at a hefty $15,990. While McArthur piloted the more agile Sport model, I rode the Cruiser, which took some getting used to. However, once I got the hang of it, maintaining balance was relatively straightforward.
These boards are heavy, with the Hydroflyer weighing around 108 pounds, including the board and battery. The lithium-ion battery, housed beneath the deck, powers the board for up to two hours and is protected by three layers of waterproofing. The Hydroflyer reaches speeds of up to 27 miles per hour, which may be slower than some competitors but feels fast enough when you’re skimming across the water.
The Hydroflyer’s standout feature is its handlebar pole, designed to feel like mountain bike handles, enhancing the rider’s control and stability. This sturdy design element sets it apart from other efoils with handlebars, which often feel flimsy. The board is also equipped with safety features, including a propeller surrounded by a casing and a motor that automatically shuts off when the throttle is released or the kill switch is activated.

As thrilling as it is, the Hydroflyer is primarily a luxury toy, appealing to yacht owners and affluent thrill-seekers. However, McArthur has broader ambitions. He envisions a more affordable version of the board, priced below $10,000, that could serve as a last-mile transit option for commuters. He hopes to incorporate autonomous driving and balancing technology to make this a reality.
Whether these ambitions will materialize remains to be seen. For now, the Hydroflyer offers an exclusive, adrenaline-fueled experience for those with deep pockets and a thirst for adventure.
