A senior Israeli defense official stated, “The precision and timing of these strikes are aimed at crippling Hezbollah’s ability to launch attacks on Israeli territory, particularly as tensions rise in the region.”
Lebanese sources reported, “The intensity of these airstrikes and the destruction observed suggest a significant escalation in Israel’s efforts to dismantle Hezbollah’s military infrastructure.”
These airstrikes come amid heightened tensions and are part of ongoing efforts by Israel to prevent Hezbollah from escalating hostilities along the northern border (The Jewish Press – JewishPress.com) (UWI).
Israeli airstrikes late Monday targeted Hezbollah arms depots deep in Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley, following a series of escalations between Israel and the militant group. The strikes, which hit towns in the Baalbek District, were in response to a drone attack that killed an Israeli officer earlier in the day.

Lebanese state media reported that at least three airstrikes hit the region, resulting in a large fire and several explosions. Videos from the scene captured the aftermath, showing the significant destruction caused by the strikes. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the operation, stating that fighter jets targeted “Hezbollah weapons storage facilities in the Bekaa Valley.” According to the IDF, secondary explosions were observed after the initial strike, indicating that the facilities contained substantial quantities of weapons.
The airstrike came after a morning attack by Hezbollah, which involved five explosive drones targeting northern Israel. Although most of the drones were intercepted, one managed to strike, killing Chief Warrant Officer Mahmood Amaria, 45, and injuring several other soldiers at a military base in the Western Galilee.
In addition to the Bekaa Valley strikes, the IDF also conducted a drone strike earlier in the day in southern Lebanon’s Deir Qanoun, near Tyre. This attack resulted in the death of Hussein Suleiman, a prominent member of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile unit. Another Hezbollah cell was targeted in Taybeh, where Israeli fighter jets struck a building housing the group’s operatives.

The exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah has been ongoing for nearly 10 months, with both sides bracing for a potential escalation. The tension has been particularly high since the recent killing of Hezbollah’s military chief Fuad Shukr, for which Israel was blamed, along with the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Both Iran and Hezbollah have vowed to retaliate for these actions.
Last week, Iranian officials suggested that a successful hostage deal between Israel and Hamas might delay direct retaliation from Iran and its allies, including Hezbollah. However, on Sunday, Hamas publicly rejected the terms of a proposed ceasefire and hostage release deal, accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of introducing new obstacles.
Following Hamas’s rejection of the ceasefire proposal, sources close to Hezbollah indicated that the group felt “freed from the restrictions” of holding back its response to avoid disrupting negotiations. Lebanese media reported that Hezbollah’s response to Shukr’s killing is ready and only the timing needs to be determined.
Since early October, Hezbollah-led forces have regularly attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border, citing their actions as support for Gaza amidst the ongoing conflict. The skirmishes have resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with 26 Israeli civilians and 19 IDF soldiers killed. Hezbollah, in turn, has reported the deaths of 415 of its members, along with other casualties in Lebanon and Syria.
